December presents some definite time management issues. Between family gatherings and the addition of holiday bustle, some home maintenance tasks may get pushed aside. Use this guide to help you stay on track.

ENTRYWAY AND LAUNDRY
  • Check dryer exhaust vent and hoses for lint
  • Place a mat to wipe feet and a boot tray to hold wet shoes by the door
  • Remove area rugs or tape down edges to minimize tripping hazards for any holiday guests
  • Test smoke and CO2 detectors.

 

BEDROOM AND LIVING AREAS

  • Remove ashes or debris from your fireplace
  • Set reminders on your phone to water the Christmas tree, blow out candles, and unplug space heaters
  • Replace burnt-out lightbulbs
  • Launder bedding and sheets to get ready for guests

 

KITCHEN
  • Check your oven seal for cracks or wear
  • Inspect the oven heating element
  • Clean the range hood filter
  • Sharpen and polish knives
  • Inspect hoses on the refrigerator and dishwasher for leaks

 

BATHROOM

  • Run water and flush the toilet in bathrooms that aren't used frequently
  • Inspect toilet and sinks for leaks
  • Install non-slip bathmats or grip bars for older visitors
  • Replace or clean existing shower curtain to remove mold/mildew
  • Restock first-aid kits to treat cuts/burns

 

ATTICS AND BASEMENTS

  • Inspect attic insulation to make sure it hasn't flattened or deteriorated
  • Caulk any attic cracks to keep animals out
  • Inspect the roof for leaks while in the attic
  • Wrap pipes with insulation to prevent freezing

 

HEATING AND SYSTEMS

  • Check pipes for leaks and wrap with insulation to protect against freezing
  • Inspect weather stripping around doors and windows
  • Clean chimney if you haven't this year and service HVAC
  • Inspect HVAC filter (replace every 3 mo.)

 

OUTDOOR TASKS

  • Set timers to turn on lights indoors and outdoors to discourage burglars
  • Install a camera or doorbell camera Remove hoses from outdoor spigots
  • Tighten handrails on the stairs
  • Check exterior pipes for leaks and wrap with insulation to avoid freezing
  • Clear the snow and ice from driveways and walk-ways
  • Don't forget about the roof, tree branches, and gutters
  • Trim overhanging branches that could damage roof if broken by snow or ice
